New Chair Appointed to the Panel on Research Ethics

A message from the three federal research agencies – Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC),
or “the Agencies:”

The Presidents of the Agencies are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Carolyn Ells as Chair of the Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics (the Panel). This appointment was effective April 1, 2015.

Dr. Carolyn Ells is a philosopher with a specialization in bioethics. She is Associate Professor of Medicine, Associate Member of the Division of Experimental Medicine, and Member of the Biomedical Ethics Unit at McGill University. She is an Associate Researcher at the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research in Montreal and a co-investigator on several healthcare-related research projects. In addition to local research ethics teaching for graduate and post-graduate trainees, researchers and REBs, Dr. Ells is co-author of a 6-module online research ethics tutorial targeting REB members and support staff within the Quebec health and social services network.

The Panel advises the Agency Presidents on the ethics of research involving humans. It also provides recommendations regarding the evolution and interpretation of Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans  (TCPS 2).
